This aligns with the character and leadership development programs that Scouting America provides to our nation’s youth.

WHAT IS A COHORT? Because people learn better in groups, a cohort is a group of people brought together within the context of a shared (and individualized) learning experience. Cohort based programs provide active, interactive, and dynamic developmental interactions that build community, foster creativity, develop leadership skills, and encourage experiential learning and application.

Within Emergent Leadership Series, participants will participate in varied assessments and inventories. These data points provide invaluable insight into a variety of perspectives- how individuals view themselves as leader, how they are viewed by others, and the actions that could improve effectiveness and impact.

Many of the assessments and inventories will be utilized throughout the duration of the program.  Others will provide specific insight and information for a point in time or a development opportunity.

Timeline:

  • Late Summer-Welcome/Orientation call (1 hr)
  • Summer to Fall-Prep work for launch
  • Fall-Program launch-retreat # 1 (3 day, 2 night)
  • Fall to Spring:
    • Weekly online leadership course content. (1 hr)
    • Weekly reading (Total of 1 book to complete each month) (2-6 hrs/mo)
    • Weekly digital check in with team to discuss content between in person meetings. (15min – 1 hr)
    • Monthly virtual retreat meeting day. (3-4 hrs)
    • Monthly check in w/ supervisor and guide. (1 hr)
    • Monthly In-council “go-see-its” (1-2 hrs)
    • February-Retreat # 2 (3 day, 2 night)
    • May-Capstone-retreat # 3 (3 day, 2 night)

Coaching:

Participants in the Cohort are matched with a Guide for the duration of the program. They will
have regular sessions to reflect and build on the topics covered.

The Mentoring Function seeks to:

• Develop and manage the mentoring relationship.
• Sponsor.
• Survey the environment.
• Guide and counsel.
• Teach.
• Model.
• Motivate and inspire.

The Coaching Function seeks to:

• Support, accelerate learning, and provide a mechanism for feedback.
• It provides an opportunity to work on skills and challenges that are presented within the
program and their translation into daily actions.

Learning Objectives:

We asked each participant to rate their knowledge or confidence in each of the 80 unique learning topics before starting, and then after completing the course.  The survey was built on a scale of 1-5, where 1 is very low or no knowledge or confidence, 2 is low, 3 is OK, 4 is Good, and 5 is Very High.  A full report of the growth reported in each of the 80 areas is available upon request.  Here are the key statistics:

  • 100% of the 80 topics showed improvement
  • The pre-course participant average was 3.44; the post-course participant average was 4.33, nearly a full point, or 20% improvement on average across the combined leadership disciplines.
  • The composite score pre-course average was 2.75.  The post-course composite average was 3.47.
  • The average gain in each of the 80 topics was 0.9, with 28 of the 80 topics showing over a 1.0 gain.

Participant Feedback:

Post course, we asked each participant to evaluate the stated course objectives, design elements, and course methods.  The evaluation was on a simple 10-point scale.  The full report of each aspect is available.  Here are the key statistics and comments:
