President Gerald Ford was part of the Eagle Scout contingent that served as the first Governor’s Honor Guard on the island over 75 years ago. Today, Scouts carry on that tradition by raising and lowering 22 flags at Fort Mackinac, the Visitor’s Center downtown, the Fort Cemetery and several other historic buildings on the island.

Mackinac Island Scout Service Program, or the Governor’s Honor Guard, is a weeklong program on the island where Scouts from all over assist with flags, provide information to tourists, and take part in service projects.  Scouts apply and join a contingent Troop for the chosen week of the summer.   Accepting a spot in a contingent includes the week of service on the island, as well as multiple shakedown events prior to the summer.

There are many Scouting America contingents that take part each summer, and Scouts from any Troop in the MCC are encouraged to apply and join.  This page will list the known contingents and provide contact information for each.  Each contingent has different requirements, fees, and shakedown dates, all determined by the unit.
