Advancement News

Advancement News was a bi-monthly newsletter sent out via email for many years and has a lot of great information.  The last edition was the January 2024 version, but you can still access the archive going back to 2011.

Click for PDF version of requirement changes. For more information, visit the BSA Merit Badge page.

Summary:

Rank Requirements:  Star and Life
Eagle Palms: Scouts no longer have to wait three months between palms.
Merit Badges: Click the link to see the full list.

Eagle Scout

Eagle Scout Service Project, Rank Application, and other resources should be downloaded from the National Council Advancement Page in order to ensure the most up to date form is being used.

To get started, download the Eagle Project Workbook and the MCC Eagle Checklist.

To generate the Eagle Scout Rank Application, a Scout, parent, or adult leader of the unit can navigate to the Eagle Scout Candidate in Scoutbook, then click Reports and then Eagle Application.

If for some reason, you are unable to generate the Eagle Scout Rank Application (mostly filled out with the data BSA has on record) from Scoutbook, you can find a blank fillable pdf of it by visiting the BSA Advancement Forms page.

Eagle Scholarships

Many scholarships exist for Eagle Scouts, so Eagle Scout families should check with local foundations for additional options besides the list below.

Michigan-Specific Eagle Congratulatory Letters

Parents and Scout Leaders are encouraged to request congratulatory letters from various local and national dignitaries.  The following list is not exhaustive but is a sample of the options available.  Tip:  Check with your local State Representative’s or State Senator’s offices.

Time Extensions

Effective Jan. 1, 2021, local councils have the authority to grant limited extensions of time to complete Eagle, Quartermaster, or Summit requirements.  These extensions are available only to youth members who qualify under the three tests listed in the GTA 9.0.4.0 and associated form 11.2.0.0 published at www.scouting.org/advancement.

Citizenship in Society

INTRODUCTION:
BSA merit badges give Scouts opportunities to learn more about the world we live in and are earned through completing a series of guided activities and tasks. The new Citizenship in Society merit badge encourages Scouts to explore information on diversity, equity, inclusion, and ethical leadership, and learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting.
