Scouting America’s most essential training has a brand-new name and a fresh new look. What was previously known as Youth Protection Training (YPT) is now called Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) – and it’s more relevant than ever.
  • Greater focus on Scouting’s SAFE initiative
  • Updated insights on technology and online threats
  • Features real volunteers in real Scouting environments

Scouting safely is our top priority, and we are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all.   The enhanced training module is now live and available to complete in My.Scouting.org.

This training is mandatory for all registered adult volunteers and has been developed with insights from leading experts in child safety, law enforcement, and child psychology. This updated training reinforces a culture of active supervision, situational awareness, and safety, ensuring we are all equipped to help keep our Scouts safe.

Course Details:

Duration: ~90 minutes
Languages: Available in English and Spanish
Requirements: Complete all lessons + score 80% or higher on the final test

After completing the full course once, a 15-minute refresher and retest is required each year to stay current.

If you’ve already completed Youth Protection Training (YPT) and it expires prior to May 31, 2026, your certification remains valid until that date. However, those volunteers with YPT expirations after May 31, 2026 will be required to take the new Safeguarding Youth Training by May 31, 2026.  All adult volunteers will have taken the updated training within the next 12 months.

“Scouting is extremely safe when we follow our protocols as designed,” says Chief Safeguarding Officer Glen Pounder, who introduced the new training at the 2025 National Annual Meeting. “The aim is to empower all of our great Scouting families to enjoy the magic of Scouting in a safe way.”
